Bonnie Jo Campbell says for the first draft of her novel, she committed to writing three pages a day, just anything for the novel, and after 50 days she called that her rough draft.  She said it was a mess, but it had a beginning, middle, and end.  She had something she could work with.

Carol Shields aims for 500 words a day—about 2 pages.  She says if she had to write three, she wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning.
